I completed this project with 3 other mechanical engineering undergrad students as part of our undergraduate capstone project. We were sponsored by Porsche to quickly prototype in about 8 weeks a solar panel car roof that can track the sun. Our design consisted of a two-axis system driven by linear actuators in one axis and a stepper motor in the other axis. The system used an onboard GPS and magnetometer to orient itself and autonomously track the sun.

I lead the system firmware and electrical design, coding most of the firmware that operated the sun tracker. The electronics were responsible for controlling the linear actuators, stepper motor, solenoids, and sensors like the GPS and magnetometer. I was also responsible for the mechanical design of the stepper motor rotational axis.

To meet time constraints, the electronics panel was prototyped with a perforated board and was operated by an Adafruit Metro Mini.
